Easter of 2009 saw my partner John (aka “Raven”) and myself on an exotic vacation to… Iceland. Why Iceland? I had heard this query over and over again, and my response has typically been the same… “Why not? It happened rather randomly.” Being an avid subscriber to travel alerts, and a voracious purveyor of Expedia, I tend to sniff out the deals the way that dogs can locate the bone.
Despite suffering from some troubling food poisoning on our first day (which consequently landed me in the hospital for a few hours), I was immediately struck by how stark and barren the land was; nothing but moss and volcanic rock. It was so beautiful and untouched by human influence - completely alone and natural. After getting to our hotel in Reykjavik from Keflavik (where we landed) and finding out we had > 8 hours before the possibility of checking into our hotel room, I finally admitted that I was suffering too much to wander around the city, and as such, we ended up in the hospital - me on an IV, and John napping in the cot beside me. After spending the better part of the day there, we headed back to the FossBaron hotel, where they finally checked us in.

On our final day, before heading to the airport, we went for a soak at the Blue Lagoon. It was fantastic! The water was blue, due to the clay - provided in tubs along the water’s edge to slather on ourselves. The volcanic rock underfoot was an amazing skin exfoliate. Combined with a fantastic lunch in Keflavik, overlooking the water, it was a great way to end a vacation and actually arrive at an airport feeling refreshed.
